FAW Jiefang Hydrogen Direct Injection Engine Industry First Ignition Success!

On June 8, 2022, the first domestic heavy-duty commercial vehicle direct-injection hydrogen engine independently designed and developed by FAW Jiefang was successfully ignited and ran stably. The hydrogen engine is a 13L heavy-duty engine with a running power of over 500 horsepower, the strongest power in its displacement class, and an indicated thermal efficiency of 55%, which has three major features of technical first, industry first and international leading, marking a major breakthrough in China's independent research and development of hydrogen direct injection engine.

The release of FAW Jiefang's hydrogen-based internal combustion power provides a new solution for the sustainable development of the commercial vehicle industry, is a powerful measure to cope with the new round of industrial changes, is the best proof of actively practicing the goal of "double carbon", and is the right choice to adapt to the development pattern of the automobile industry.

FAW Jiefang Hydrogen Direct Injection Engine Industry First Ignition Success!

The successful ignition of the hydrogen direct injection engine is another epoch-making solution provided by FAW Jiefang for the sustainable development of the traditional power of commercial vehicles and the transformation of zero-carbon power, marking another solid step in the "15333" new energy strategy. The zero-carbon hydrogen-based internal combustion power incubation platform, on which the hydrogen direct injection engine is based, has the capability of direct injection of hydrogen single-fuel cylinder, mixed injection of hydrogen single-fuel cylinder and airway, and dual fuel injection of ammonia and hydrogen, which can be flexibly converted into hydrogen, ammonia and other net zero-carbon fuel products.

So let's learn more about hydrogen engines

Can hydrogen be used directly in engines?

Regulations limiting greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) from motor vehicles are being tightened around the world. As a result, both hydrogen engines and hydrogen fuel cells are receiving increasing attention. And of course the hydrogen engine was born. Hydrogen engines can power vehicles that use zero-carbon fuel hydrogen. A hydrogen engine burns hydrogen in an internal combustion engine in the same way that petrol is used in an engine. A hydrogen engine is almost identical to a conventional spark ignition engine.

Hydrogen engines are usually able to run on a lower grade of hydrogen. This is convenient for specific use cases. For example, you may have a site where hydrogen can be produced on site using steam methane reforming and carbon capture and storage (CCS). This hydrogen can then be used in a hydrogen engine without the need for purification.
